Ceiling trays are a reasonably affordable way to take a plain (or popcorn) ceiling and transform it into something special.  This design is simple ... and clean ... there are a multitude of options using this design concept.

This sitting area was created by framing down from the original (damaged) ceiling ... and making an attractive ceiling box.  Complete with embossed faux finished paper (excellent acoustics for the piano), mouldings, and new recessed lighting. The Coral CastleStone Corinthian columns and arched CastleStone fireplace really add beautiful elements to this small (but important) area of the home.

Apprentice Notes is a series of training guides created for our Apprentice Partners and DIY homeowner friends.

Have you ever wanted to change the look of a wall that has paneling, old wallpaper, water damage, stains, or is unsightly for other various reasons?  There is a simple, affordable, easy to install solution.  Decorative Embossed and/or Decorative Textured coverings.

To re-surface paneling:

• Make sure paneling is properly secured to the wall. Add paneling nails if needed to secure paneling. Use a nail set tool, if necessary.
• Remove nails used for pictures, clocks, and other wall decor.
• TIP: Sometimes its better to go ahead and drive the nail all the way into the paneling.  Always remove screws.
• Fill lines in paneling with drywall mud.  Press mud into gap with horizontal motion, then scrape downward (vertical) to smooth out. 
• After mud dries, lightly sand ... doesn't have to be perfect, just reasonably smooth.
• TIP: Wear a dust mask to protect yourself.
• Prime paneling with a good mildew resistant primer. It normally dries fast.  Make sure you have good ventilation in the room.
• TIP: Romans Pro-988 recommended (Sherwin Williams, nationwide).
• NOTE: The recommended primer and adhesive system allows for easy removal of the covering.  It peels away with very little effort, if you use the proper installation technique outlined here.
• Install thick smooth backer paper in a horizontal position.  Start at the top, work your way down the wall.  Use a good quality wallpaper adhesive with mildew resistant features.  Romans Pro-888 recommended (Sherwin Williams, nationwide).
• Find your starting point.  Use light pencil marks to indicate where each piece will be placed. If you like the layout ... go with it. If you don't, find a layout that works for the project area.
• Mark your wall where the first sheet will be placed. Use a good 4' to 8' level for your plumb line.  Important step, it's only necessary to do this once.
• If the first piece is plumb, then all the others will follow suit ... because you are butting up (and lining up) factory edges with a perfectly plumb piece each time you install a new piece.
• Alternative: You can also use a string attached by a small nail at the top of the wall ... with some kind of weight on the bottom of the string.  Mark the top, center, then mark the bottom.  Use a straight edge to draw your line. 
• TIP: Sears makes a plumb tool with a chalk line that is wonderful for this step.
• Check your plumb line with a good level to make sure you are plumb.  This step is important, to insure your wallcovering is level and plumb.
• Install your Decorative Embossed or Decorative Textured covering using a clear, quality mildew resistant adhesive. Run in vertical position just like traditional wallcovering, making sure to match up the pattern on each new piece.
• These specialty embossed and textured papers install like traditional wallcovering (do not soak in water)
• They are thicker and easier to work with.  The patterns are more forgiving and do not allow imperfections behind the paper to show as easily.  They are not translucent, they are heavy papers designed to cover-up paneling, old wallpaper, damaged walls, stained, walls, etc.
• Follow directions on the covering package or use directions supplied by Knights Valley USA when you ordered your supplies. 
• TIP: Some coverings require you to put the adhesive on the wall, some require adhesive on the paper.  Use an inexpensive adhesive roller for this step.
• Use a good quality wallpaper roller (sponge type) and brush to install your covering.  Most small air bubbles will disappear after the adhesive has completely dried.
• TIP: You can use a needle to lightly puncture the air bubble, the press out the air (and adhesive) behind it.
• All of your supplies, tools, and materials can be ordered directly from Knights Valley USA.  Or we will provide you with a shopping list and nationwide discount programs from authorized retailers.
• Be sure to use a lightly damp sponge to remove the excessive adhesive.  Try to keep your sponge clean.
• TIP: I re-use a five gallon bucket with fresh water for this step.
• You can now stain, paint, or faux finish your new wall. Enjoy!
• Take pictures ... before and after, send to Knights Valley USA for publishing on our website!
